"Life on the Death Beat: A Handbook for Obituary Writers" outlines the basics of good obit writing and explores the pros, cons and peculiarities of an obituary writer's life on the death beat.

The authors, who approach the task of summing up a life as a joy rather than a drudgery, discuss how they choose their subjects, interviewing and researching techniques and dealing with the bereaved.

The book addresses numerous obituary-related issues, including writing about dead folks who were less than saintly in life, choosing photos that enhance the obit and - the first rule of obit writing - making sure the subject of the story is indeed dead.

The authors - Alana Baranick, Jim Sheeler and Stephen Miller - are veteran obit writers and reporters.

Baranick, who won the 2005 American Society of Newspaper Editors Distinguished Writing Award in the obits category while writing obits for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, is the instructor for an online obituary writing course for Poynter Institute's NewsU, and is director of the Society of Professional Obituary Writers.

Sheeler won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing and 2006 ASNE Award for Nondeadline Writing as a general assignment reporter for the Rocky Mountain News in Denver. Before joining the Rocky Mountain News staff, he penned weekly obituary features called "A Colorado Life" as a freelance writer for the Denver Post. He is the author of an obits anthology titled "Obit: Inspiring stories of ordinary people who led extraordinary lives" and "Final Salute," an in-depth account of his Pulitzer-winning feature about military families losing loved ones in the war in Iraq.

Miller, who created and edited the New York Sun's obituary section until the paper folded in September 2008, pens the Wall Street Journal's weekly "Remembrances." He published the online obituary magazine, "Goodbye! The Journal of Contemporary Obituaries," while working as a Wall Street systems analyst.
